| Filene's Basement |
 |
Filene’s Basement sells
brand-name and designer fashions for men and women at prices 30
percent to 60 percent below department stores’ regular prices.
The company’s buyers search both the American and European
markets for quality branded merchandise at the “right”
price. Unlike other off-pricers, the Basement’s niche is in
higher-end merchandise, focusing on bridge, designer and event couture
fashions for the store’s discerning customers. The store also
carries shoes, accessories, fine jewelry, salon products, luggage,
gourmet foods, home decorative goods and clothes for infants and
toddlers.
Founded in Boston in 1908, the store’s original
purpose was to sell off excess merchandise from Filene’s,
a family-owned full price department store upstairs in the same
building. Before long other retailers and manufacturers were bringing
their unsold goods to him to sell, and the concept of the “off-price”
store was born.
Filene’s Basement in City Center is the newest
store in the chain and the fifth in New York. Other stores are located
in the Northeast, Midwest and South. For more information go to
www.filenesbasement.com
